Long before magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and other brain images allowed us to glimpse what is going on inside our skull without drilling into it, human beings had another invaluable resource: words. Words can not only «implant» themselves into the brain and transform it, but also tell us how it is functioning.

Mucho antes de que la resonancia magnética, la tomografía por emisión de positrones y otras imágenes cerebrales nos permitieran atisbar lo que sucede en el interior de nuestro cráneo sin perforarlo, los seres humanos contábamos con otro recurso invalorable: las palabras. Éstas no solo pueden “implantarse” en el cerebro y transformarlo, sino también indicarnos cómo está funcionando.
