All animals have developed mechanisms which allow them to communicate with their own kind. Birds use songs that attract mates; primates use vocalizations that warn of threats; dolphins use whistles that allow them to identify their conspecifics… These systems present different levels of complexity, but, as far as we can guess, none comes close to the sophistication and richness of human language.

Todos los animales han desarrollado mecanismos que les permiten comunicarse con otros miembros de su especie. Las aves se valen de cantos que atraen parejas; los primates, de vocalizaciones que advierten sobre amenazas; los delfines, de silbidos que les permiten identificar a sus congéneres… Estos sistemas presentan diversos niveles de complejidad, pero, hasta donde intuimos, ninguno se acerca a la sofisticación y riqueza del lenguaje humano.
